Hospice of Hilo is looking for volunteers to provide compassionate care for individuals and families facing a life-limiting illness, death or grief.

The volunteer training will be conducted 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Aug. 12 and 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Aug. 14 and 17 at Hospice of Hilo’s Community Center, 1011 Waianuenue Ave.

“Hospice of Hilo volunteers are called upon to perform an array of supportive services, including patient care, respite care, bereavement care, transportation, companionship, shopping, errands, active listening and reading, as well as office administrative support, community education and public relations,” said hospice volunteer manager Jeanette Mochida. “They really are the heart of what we do at Hospice of Hilo.”

With the 2012 opening of Hospice of Hilo’s Pohai Malama a Harry &Jeanette Weinberg Care Center, the services volunteers provide for the organization have expanded.

“Volunteers have been helping us care for our gardens at the care center, and we have a few amazing people who come to play music for the patients,” said Hospice of Hilo CEO Brenda S. Ho.

“It’s really wonderful. Our volunteers are truly an amazing group of people. We wouldn’t be able to do the work we do without them.”

Individuals interested in becoming a Hospice of Hilo volunteer can sign up for the training sessions by calling Mochida at 969-1733. To find out more about Hospice of Hilo, visit www.hospiceofhilo.org.
